Brendan Rodgers agrees deal to become new Liverpool manager

The 39-year-old will sign a three-year contract at Anfield and his appointment is likely to be officially confirmed within 24 hours.

Liverpool will pay Swansea City between £4m and £5m in compensation to secure the Northern Irishman’s services.

Seeing how well Swansea did this last season, I am cautiously positive…

Katla is a very active and versatile volcano.

Someone please explain how a volcano can be “versatile”?!

Interesting article on the reporting of health and medical stories

Even a thing or two in this that I hadn’t entirely cottoned onto before. I know I’m not the most stat-savvy, but I’m still surprised by that!

It’s funny, but I always forget just how far away the moon is from the Earth. Wierd, huh?

F1 and Protected Sporting Event status

Interesting article from 2009 on F1 and the EU’s rules on culturally important sporting events. Pity it didn’t surface before the horse had bolted, been horse-napped, shot, and sold for glue…

This is what people in my area do with their free time - Cheese Rolling. Otherwise known as throwing themselves down a muddy 1 in 2 hill after a 3.6kg Double Gloucester…

Despite the official event being cancelled, and thus there being no medical coverage present, and the weather being a typical British Bank Holiday, 200 people turned up for the five races - three for the men, one for the women, and an uphill one for the kids.

It is traditional though - it’s been running for hundreds of years, and people travel from the other side of the world to take part. The last official event, in 2009, had 15,000 people turn up.

All I say is crazy, crazy people…

End of the world... again.

There’s been plenty going around about the end of the world that’s meant to be predicted for this weekend, the “after parties” that atheists and co. are arranging all over the world, the man spending all his savings to put up billboards all around his town warning people about it, etc, etc.

However, it was this bit in this particular article that made it worth linking to:

“An atheist and entrepreneur from North Hampshire, Bart Centre, is enjoying a boost in business for Eternal Earth-bound Pets, which he set up to look after the pets of those who believe they will be raptured.

He has more than 250 clients who are paying up to $135 (£83) to have their pets picked up and cared for after the rapture.

They would be disappointed twice, he told the Wall Street Journal. ‘Once because they weren’t raptured and again because I don’t do refunds.’ “

Perhaps this ‘student’ should forget university and go back to school and learn why what they are doing is so disrespectful and why they are losing everyone’s sympathy and gaining our contempt…

Seeing this genuinely upsets me :(

Response to the Oxbridge article / debate

Yep, it’s the Guardian again. I know, I know. But it’s another good article. A couple more examples of how you can make stats say whatever you want if you cherry-pick them and don’t look at the bigger picture. There’s the standard reiteration that it’s not Oxbridge’s fault that the school system fails people earlier too, and that it’s a bad idea to make universities bear the brunt of these failures by forcing them to conform to counter-productive quotas and targets (but that’s not to say that they don’t try!). So yep, enjoy!
